According to the latest ISTAT data, nearly one in ten people in Italy lives in absolute poverty: that’s 5.694 million individuals belonging to 2.217 million families unable to maintain a dignified standard of living. To support them, a widespread solidarity network operates daily, engaging volunteers and resources. But it’s time to reflect: what is the difference between poverty and misery? And how can acts of charity preserve human dignity and avoid slipping into pity or paternalism?
