Stefano Zamagni

Stefano Zamagni (Rimini, 1943) is an economist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Bologna, where he taught Political Economy, and an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University, SAIS Europe. After graduating in Economics and Business from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuoret, he specialised at the University of Oxford.

For over fifty years, he has been studying the relationship between the economy and society, exploring how the market can once again become a tool at the service of the individual and the common good. At the heart of his work lie the themes of the civil economy, reciprocity, cooperation, the third sector and social responsibility, based on the conviction that a truly human economy cannot be separated from relationships and the community dimension.

He has held numerous academic and institutional posts, including the presidency of the Agency for the Third Sector and the Fondazione Italia per il Dono. From 2019 to 2023, he served as president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, of which he is now President Emeritus.

He is the author of numerous boks and essays, including Economia Civile, Responsabili. Come civilizzare il mercato, Diseguali, Pensare la salute and Introduzione all’Economia Civile. For his scientific and cultural work, he has received numerous awards, including the Sigismondo d’Oro from the City of Rimini, the St Vincent Prize for Economics and several honorary doctorates.
