Ettore Rosato

Ettore Rosato, born in Trieste in 1968, began his political career with the Christian Democrats in 1987. In 1993, he stood as a candidate for the City Council with the centre-left coalition in support of Riccardo Illy, and in 1995, at the age of just 27, he became the youngest Italian to be elected chairman of a city council.

In 2003, he was elected as a regional councillor for La Margherita, receiving the highest number of votes, and subsequently won the by-election to the Chamber of Deputies to replace the newly appointed governor of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Riccardo Illy. In 2006, he was appointed by Romano Prodi to the Government as Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of the Interior, with responsibility for the Fire Service and Civil Protection; in 2008, he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies.

During the 16th legislature, he served on the Defence Committee and Copasir (the Parliamentary Committee for the Oversight of the Secret Services), whilst within his parliamentary group he held the post of Treasurer. Following the primaries to select parliamentary candidates, he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2013. A member of the Constitutional Affairs Committee, he served as the parliamentary group’s Secretary of the Chamber.

During the 17th legislature, from June 2015, he served as leader of the Democratic Party group in the Chamber of Deputies and as a member of Copasir from 2016. Re-elected in 2018 for the 18th legislature, he served as Deputy Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. In September 2019, he left the PD to found, alongside Matteo Renzi, the Italia Viva party, of which he was leader until 2022.

In the 2022 general election, he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies on the ‘Azione-Italia Viva’ list. He is currently a deputy in the 19th legislature, secretary of the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic (Copasir) and national deputy secretary of ‘Azione’.
