After completing his high school diploma in science and earning a degree in civil engineering with a score of 110/110 with honors, since 2004 he has been registered with the Order of Engineers and has practiced as a freelance professional ever since. Stefano Patuanelli previously carried out typical civil engineering work, focusing on the design and management of construction processes, particularly public works; he also dealt with safety on temporary and mobile construction sites, directly witnessing the significant challenges that still exist in this work sector.

His political engagement began on July 17, 2005, with the establishment of the Beppe Grillo Group in Trieste.

During his mandate in Trieste, Stefano Patuanelli was involved in concrete initiatives aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life, seeking to make a tangible contribution in areas closest to his professional expertise, such as territorial planning, innovation in the country’s productive sectors, construction, environment, infrastructure, and transport.

Elected as a senator for the Friuli–Venezia Giulia constituency in the 2018 national elections, he was later chosen as the parliamentary group leader in the Senate. On September 5, 2019, he was sworn in before the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, as Minister of Economic Development, a ministry where he introduced significant reforms for businesses, including the National 4.0 Transition Plan, the so-called Superbonus 110% for building renovations, and the reform of the Central Guarantee Fund for SMEs.

On February 13, 2021, he was sworn in as Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies for the government led by Mario Draghi.

He was subsequently re-elected to the Senate on September 25, 2022, where he currently serves as the parliamentary group leader of the Five Star Movement.
