The Harry Potter saga places the problem of death at its very center, exploring it through a wide spectrum of ways of confronting it — because the struggle for salvation (of individuals and of the world) that runs through the text from the first to the last page is rooted in the acceptance of a fact of reality: death is a part of reality, at once inevitable and unacceptable, and ultimately invincible. And yet, at the same time, death can be defeated by a more powerful force that strips it of its power to determine life and that allows human beings to “go beyond”: this force is love — a word that, within the text, names and defines “an ancient magic,” mysterious and forgotten, whose power and effectiveness evil underestimates and/or is unable to recognize.

Rowling’s saga is a masterpiece of contemporary literature with something urgent to say to the people of today. It is not a matter of proposing an interpretation of it, but rather of offering the chance to pause and listen to the great words that the text embodies.
