1700 YEARS SINCE THE COUNCIL OF NICAEA

H.H. Bartholomew of Constantinople, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch; H.E. Card. Kurt Koch, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity. Welcome address by Bernhard Scholz, President of the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples ETS Foundation. Moderated by Andrea D’Auria, Director of the International Center of Communion and Liberation

The Council of Nicaea marked a decisive turning point in the history of the Church and the world. After many painful disputes over the figure of Jesus Christ, the bishops convened in 325 in the city of Nicaea (present-day Iznik, Turkey) by Emperor Constantine formulated the Creed that restored unity to the Church and continues to be professed to this day.
It is a profession of faith fundamentally shared by both the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches. For 1700 years, this has been the definition of faith that opens the life of every baptized person to an ever more truthful and profound recognition of the Savior—“true God and true man.”
