As part of the Jubilee of Hope 2025, the Meeting of Rimini presents a powerful and evocative exhibition: The Paths of the Sacred. Gestures and Rituals of Faith in Contemporary Photography. Curated by Micol Forti and Alessandra Mauro, with the collaboration of Suleima Autore and Livia Ficoroni.

When Photography Encounters Mystery

There are images that linger, that cannot be forgotten. Some even manage to brush against something beyond what they show. That is the aim of this exhibition: to narrate the sacred not with words, but through the gaze of great photographers who have chosen to focus their lens where faith becomes gesture, ritual, presence.
Photographs that speak of pilgrimages, prayers, dances, silences. And that reveal the deep connection between spirituality and the body, between earth and sky, between tradition and the present. In these often black-and-white shots, one senses the force of an intuition that doesn’t seek to explain, but to share an experience.

Authoritative Gazes, Recognizable Voices

The names on display hardly need introduction. Just a few examples:

  • Gianni Berengo Gardin, born in 1930, tireless chronicler of Italian life, from working-class Venice to monastic interiors: always discreet, always respectful.
  • Sebastião Salgado, one of the most renowned Brazilian photographers, has captured the wounds of the world and the dignity of those who bear them—each shot carries a sense of redemption.
  • Ferdinando Scianna, from Sicily, has interwoven storytelling, culture, and spirituality. His images are a long meditation on meaning, memory, and symbol.

Alongside them: Antonio Biasiucci, Giorgia Fiorio, Mimmo Jodice, Mario Giacomelli, Markéta Luskačová, Harun Farocki. Each with a distinctive style, each capable of approaching mystery without simplifying it. Together, they compose a visual polyphony that spans eras, geographies, and sensibilities.

A Setting That Supports Without Overwhelming

Strong wall colors, black-and-white photographs, brief but evocative texts. The exhibition layout offers a space for visual listening, immersion, and quiet. It invites visitors to slow down and step into a different rhythm.

Believers or not, everyone has, at some point, faced something that goes beyond. A loss, a birth, a landscape that takes your breath away. The Paths of the Sacred does not offer answers—it raises questions. And it does so with a beauty that moves, with images that stay with you.

This exhibition is an invitation to begin a journey—even just with your eyes. To be challenged by an image, to recognize in the faces of others something that concerns us too. A simple yet profound proposal, addressed to anyone willing to pause and look.
