Giovanni Ziccardi

Giovanni Ziccardi (Castelfranco Emilia, 1969) is Full Professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Milan, where he teaches Legal Informatics and coordinates the “Information Society Law Center” (ISLC). He served as Jean Monnet Professor for the course “European Union Data Governance and Cybersecurity” (2019–2022) and teaches the cybercrime module in the Master’s Programme in Law of New Technologies at the University of Bologna.
He is a member of the University of Milan’s Ethics Committee, Security Committee and Artificial Intelligence Board, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the technology company Centrico (Banca Sella Group) and of the institutional working group on Artificial Intelligence of the Milan Bar Association.
A lawyer and journalist, he holds a degree in Law from the University of Modena and a PhD from the University of Bologna. He has published numerous scientific articles and monographs with leading Italian and international publishers. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Ciberspazio e Diritto” and collaborates with “il Mulino”, “Doppiozero”, “Il Fatto Quotidiano”, “Corriere della Sera” and the “Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani”.
Passionate about digital culture since the 1980s, he has explored the hacker world and issues of online freedom in the essays “Hacker – Il richiamo della libertà” (Marsilio, 2011) and “Aggiustare il mondo. Aaron Swartz e l’etica hacker” (Milano University Press, 2022), as well as in the thrillers “Occhi nella Rete” (1999), “L’ultimo hacker” (2012) and “La rete ombra” (2018).
For many years, he has promoted public awareness of cybersecurity and privacy through editorial and training initiatives, including the column “Diritti digitali” in “Donna Moderna” and courses at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia. He is coordinator of the advanced course in Cybercrime and Digital Investigations and of the advanced course in Coding and Design for Lawyers at the University of Milan.
