Metsola Roberta

Roberta Metsola, born in 1979, has been President of the European Parliament since January 2022 and was re-elected in July 2024 for a second term until 2027, receiving 562 votes in the first ballot. She is the second woman and the first Maltese to lead the European Parliament for two terms.
She was first elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 2013, becoming one of the first Maltese women in the Assembly, and was subsequently re-elected in 2014 and 2019. In 2020, she was elected First Vice-President of the European Parliament, the first Maltese citizen to hold the position, with responsibilities for relations with national parliaments and participation in interreligious and non-confessional dialogue under Article 17 TFEU.
Within the Parliament, she coordinated the European People’s Party (EPP) Group in the LIBE Committee (Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs) from 2017 to 2020. She was rapporteur on the European regulation for the European Border and Coast Guard (2019) and co-authored the report on measures to protect EU journalists from strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP).
In her second term, she has promoted an agenda to simplify EU legislative procedures, focusing on employment, economic stability, and security, including key regulatory revisions such as CSRD and CSDDD. Among her institutional activities, in June 2025 she proposed to the European Council allowing pregnant MEPs to delegate their vote; in May 2025 she visited Italy (Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, and Lombardy) for meetings with entrepreneurs, students, and authorities to promote competitiveness and innovation; in September 2025, she spoke at the University of Messina on European strategies against national and transnational crime.
A lawyer specialized in European law and policy, before her election to the Parliament she served at Malta’s Permanent Representation to the EU and as legal advisor to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs. She is married to Ukko Metsola and has four children.
