Manfredi Gaetano

Gaetano Manfredi, born in Ottaviano (Naples) on 4 January 1964, is an Italian politician and engineer. He grew up in Nola. He graduated in civil engineering with an honours degree from the University of Naples Federico II in 1988, a university where he became professor of construction technology in 1998. He was Rector of the Federico II from 1 November 2014 to 10 January 2020. He chaired the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI) from 2015 to 2020, fighting for the defence of university and research. His research activity has mainly focused on earthquake engineering, and he is the author or editor of numerous books and over 400 scientific papers. He was a member of the Consiglio Superiore dei Lavori Pubblici and the Commissione Grandi Rischi.
Between 2006 and 2008, he was technical advisor to the Minister for Reforms and Innovations in Public Administration. From 10 January 2020 to 13 February 2021 he was Minister for Universities and Research in the Conte II government.
Since 18 October 2021 he has been Mayor of Naples and its metropolitan city, succeeding Luigi de Magistris.
On 20 November 2024 he was unanimously elected President of the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), succeeding Antonio Decaro through the interim president Roberto Pella.
