Wael Farouq

Wael Farouq, PhD, is an associate professor of Arabic language and literature at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.

Previously, he worked at various international universities, including the American University in Cairo and the Faculty of Law at New York University.
He is director of the Institute of Arab Culture at the Catholic University of Milan.
He is a member of the scientific and steering committee of the Centre for Arabic Language Research (CARA), and of the steering committee of the Observatory of Terminology and Language Policies (OTPL).
He is a member of the scientific committee of the journals European Journal of Language Policy and Cahiers de Lexicologie, and of the Gli Studi dell’OTPL series published by EDUCATT.

He is editor-in-chief of the international cultural journal Jusùr, published in English.

He was awarded the 2025 Mediterranean Excellence Prize by the Italian Ministry of Culture, promoted by the Association of Mediterranean Journalists, in recognition of his commitment to promoting intercultural dialogue, language training and Mediterranean cooperation through culture, education and ethical reflection.
He is the author of several academic articles, essays and monographs in Italian, Arabic and English, including: The fatwā in the digital age. What are Muslim millennials looking for? (La fatwā nell’era digitale. What are Muslim millennials looking for?, 2024) and Conflicting Arab Identities: Language, Tradition and ModernityIdentità arabe in conflitto: lingua, tradizione e modernità, 2023).
He is the author of the essay The Windows of Benedict XVI: Reason, Revelation and Law, in the volume edited by Marta Cartabia and Andrea Simoncini entitled The Law of King Solomon. Reason and Law in the Speeches of Benedict XVI, with a foreword by President Giorgio Napolitano (BUR Rizzoli, 2013).

He is the author of five Arabic language textbooks: the series *Words in Action* for Vita e Pensiero and the volume *Learning Arabic from the Mass Media* for Carocci.
