Draghi Mario

Mario Draghi (born Rome 1947) is an Italian economist and banker. After studying economics in Rome and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he was professor of International Economics in Florence (1981-1991) and held management positions at the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank. In 1990, he became an economic consultant to the Bank of Italy. From 1991 to 2001, he was Director General of the Ministry of the Treasury, leading major privatisations and signing the Draghi Law (Legislative Decree 58/1998) on public offerings and takeovers. After a stint as Vice President for Europe at Goldman Sachs (2002-05), he was Governor of the Bank of Italy from 2005 to 2011. He then served as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 1 November 2011 to 31 October 2019. In February 2021, he was appointed by President Mattarella to form a government in Italy and took office as Prime Minister. In July 2022, he resigned, later accepted after a failed attempt to rebuild the majority. The collection ‘Ten Years of Challenges’ (2022) traces his efforts. In September 2023, the European Commission commissioned him to write a report on the future of European competitiveness. Presented in September 2024, the report ‘The future of European competitiveness’ with 170 proposals called for a radical change in European industrial policy in strategic areas (defence, energy transition, raw materials), indicating an annual need for additional investment of EUR 750-800 billion.
