Calenda Carlo

Italian manager and politician (b. Rome, 1973). After earning a degree in Law, he began working in the financial sector with San Paolo Invest, Prudential Sim, and Southern Star. He served as General Director of Interporto Campano and President of Interporto Servizi Cargo. From 2004 to 2008, he was Director of the International Affairs department at Confindustria, and also worked for Ferrari and Sky. He was the political coordinator of the association Italia Futura, and later ran as a candidate on the Civic Choice list. From 2013 to 2016, he served as Deputy Minister for Economic Development under both the Letta and Renzi governments. In 2015, he joined the Democratic Party (PD). In 2016, he was appointed Italy’s Permanent Representative to the European Union by the Renzi government, a position he held until May 10 of the same year, when he was appointed Minister of Economic Development in the Renzi Cabinet, a role he retained in the Gentiloni government. In 2019, he was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the PD; that same year, he left the PD and launched a new political movement called Azione. In 2022, during Azione’s first Congress, he was elected party secretary. In the same year’s general elections, the party ran on a joint list with Italia Viva, receiving around 8% of the vote, and he was elected to the Senate.
