Amarante Alfonso

Alfonso Amarante is the Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University. He has been a religious of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (C.Ss.R.) since 1993 and was ordained a priest in 1997. In 2002, he earned his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He furthered his academic training with courses at the Alfonsian Academy, where he began teaching in 2002 as an assistant and from 2003 as a lecturer. He is a Full Professor of the History of Moral Theology at the Alfonsian Academy.

From 2008 to 2016, he taught at the Pontifical Urbaniana University and at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology of Southern Italy, San Luigi Section (Naples). Since 2017, he has held a chair in Moral Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University. From 2013 to 2018, he served as Vice-Dean of the Alfonsian Academy, and since 2018 he has been Dean of the Academy and Secretary of CRUIPRO (Conference of Rectors of Roman Pontifical Universities and Institutions). He is a member of the Presidential Council and Treasurer of the “Association of Professors of Church History in Italy” and serves as a consultor to the Congregation for the Saints.

He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Spicilegium Historicum and is part of both the Institute and the scientific committee. He is the author of books and numerous scholarly contributions. He was elected Archbishop of Sorres on August 1, 2023, and has served as Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical Lateran University since September 11, 2023.
