Alberzoni Maria Pia

Maria Pia Alberzoni was Full Professor of Medieval History from 2008 to 2023 and teaches History of Medieval Historiography at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. She has had an intense international teaching and research activity, teaching as Visiting Professor in several universities in Europe (such as Vienna, Dresden, Mainz) and in the United States (St Bonaventure University).
She is actively involved in the scientific community, being a member or holding management and scientific positions in important institutions and study centres. Among these, she is a member of the Governing Council of the Italian Centre for Late Medieval Studies in Todi and vice-president of the Italian Society of Medieval Historians (SISMED).
He directs the series ‘Ordines. Studies on Institutions and Society in the European Middle Ages’ and is on the scientific committees of other relevant series and journals in the field of Franciscan and medieval studies.
His research focuses on the history of religious orders, analysing their development in the early Middle Ages and their relations with ecclesiastical authority. He has also studied the relations between the communes of Po Valley Italy, the episcopate and the papacy in the 12th and 13th centuries. Central themes in his publications are communication, dissent, consensus and authority in the Middle Ages. A significant part of her studies is devoted to Franciscanism.
She is the author of numerous essays and books, including recent works that explore the themes of dissent, consensus, authority and the figure of Francis of Assisi.
