Jesuit Missions and Encounters Between Cultures

The encounter between cultures is never a neutral fact, nor a mere exchange of forms or ideas. It is a human event, a living happening that engages the gaze and the freedom of both the one who encounters and the one who is encountered. The missions of the Society of Jesus — between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century — tell precisely of this kind of encounter, one capable of transforming those who live it. The experience of the Jesuits bears witness to a Christianity lived not as an idea to be translated or a system to be applied, but as a new culture born from the encounter with Christ. And precisely because it is a living culture, it enters into relationship with other cultures not to annul them but to fulfill them, to give them value, to transfigure them.
