Marco Gui

Marco Gui is an associate professor at the Department of Sociology and Social Research at the University of Milano-Bicocca, specializing in Media Sociology. He is the director of “Benessere Digitale,” a research center that studies the relationship between digital media and quality of life (www.benesseredigitale.eu
). His research interests focus on: i) digital skills; ii) “digital inequality”; iii) cognitive and social side effects of digitalization; and iv) digitalization in education and teaching.

His research has been published in some of the most influential international journals on these topics, including New Media & Society, Computers & Education, Social Science Computer Review, Economics of Education Review, The Information Society, International Journal of Communication, and Computers in Human Behavior. He is the author of several books, including A dieta di media. Comunicazione e qualità della vita (Il Mulino, 2014) and Il digitale a scuola. Rivoluzione o abbaglio? (Il Mulino, 2019).

Gui has coordinated several large-scale research projects funded by public institutions (Ministry of Economic Development, Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Lombardy Region, Aosta Valley Region, and IPRASE Trentino). He has also served as a consultant for INVALSI, OECD, and private companies such as Fastweb S.p.A. In collaboration with some of these institutions, he contributed to developing Italy’s first statistically rigorous digital skills assessments (see Gui & Argentin, 2011; Pagani et al., 2013; Gui et al., 2018; Gui et al., 2023). He is the scientific coordinator of the projects “Benessere Digitale Scuole” (www.benesseredigitalescuole.it
) and “Digital Transformation and Wellbeing Lab” (MUSA, Spoke 6, PNRR).

He is a member of AIS (Italian Sociological Association), ECREA (European Communication Research and Education Association), and ICA (International Communication Association). Since 2026, he has been President of the Fondazione Patti Digitali ETS.
