Nello Musumeci

Nello Musumeci has been the Italian Government’s Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policy since 2022. Born in Militello Val di Catania in 1955, he began his political career in the 1970s. He served twice as President of the Province of Catania and as a Member of the European Parliament for three terms, from 1994 to 2009, where he focused in particular on agriculture, fisheries, the environment and regional policies.

He has held important posts in the field of civil protection: in 2001 he was the Government Commissioner for the Mount Etna volcanic emergency and, the following year, Commissioner for Reconstruction. In 2017, he was elected President of the Sicilian Region, a post he held until 2022.

Since 22 October 2022, he has been Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policy. Over the years, he has promoted policies focused on emergency prevention and management, post-disaster reconstruction and risk reduction across the region, with particular attention to the safety and resilience of communities. In 2026, he oversaw, amongst other things, reconstruction efforts following seismic and hydrogeological events, as well as policies aimed at enhancing the resilience of the smaller islands.
