Terzi di Sant’Agata Giulio

Giuliomaria Terzi di Sant’Agata, born in Bergamo on June 9, 1946, is an Italian diplomat and politician. He graduated in law from the University of Milan, specializing in international law, after attending the Collegio Vescovile Sant’Alessandro in Bergamo.
He began his diplomatic career in 1973, holding numerous positions both abroad and at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. His key roles include First Secretary for Political Affairs at the Italian Embassy in Paris, Economic and Commercial Counselor in Canada, and Consul General in Vancouver. He served as Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in New York from 1993 to 1998, and was Italian Ambassador to Israel between 2002 and 2004. He then served as Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations from 2008 to 2009, leading the Italian delegation to the Security Council, and as Italian Ambassador to the United States of America from October 2009 to November 2011.
On November 16, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Monti government. During his term, which lasted until March 26, 2013, he supported initiatives such as the “Westervelle Group” for “more Europe,” the moratorium on the death penalty, and the campaign for the elimination of female genital mutilation. He also promoted the signing of the agreement for the “Transadriatic” gas pipeline with Albania and Greece and reactivated political relations with Somalia. His resignation came following the diplomatic crisis with India over the case of the two Italian marines.
After his ministerial experience, Terzi joined Fratelli d’Italia in 2013 and was elected Senator of the Italian Republic in the 2022 political elections. He currently chairs the 4th European Union Policy Committee of the Senate of the Republic. He is also Honorary President of the Transnational Radical Party and a member of the Nessuno tocchi Caino association, which campaigns against the death penalty. Among the honors he has received, the most notable is that of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
