Nicora Carlo

Carlo Nicora is Director General of the IRCCS Foundation National Cancer Institute of Milan.
He is from Varese, a hygienist. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pavia, where he also obtained the specialization in Pathophysiology and Respiratory Physiokinesitherapy and, in 1992, at the University of Milan, he specialized in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine.
From 1 January 2022 he’s Director General of the IRCCS Foundation National Cancer Institute of Milan. In the last three years he has been Director General of the IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo di Pavia Foundation. A large Research Institute that is characterized by its highly specialized multi-specialist reality and by its strong vocation for the integration of scientific research, assistance and teaching. In 2019, a reality with a budget of 420 million Euros; single unit healthcare facility – level II DEA with 856 active beds, 35,926 hospitalizations, 14,067 emergency hospitalizations, 102,072 emergency room visits, 2,584,000 outpatient services, 3,572 employees. In these three years at the helm of the San Matteo Polyclinic, he coordinated, in addition to the management of the Covid-19 pandemic emergency, which saw, as early as February 22, 2020, the first 5 admissions in Intensive Care and 9 in Infectious Diseases up to 72 Intensive Care beds and 260 ordinary Covid beds, of which 60 with advanced respiratory support; the construction of the helipad and restructuring of the Emergency Department and Emergency Medicine; the technological upgrading of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine; the drafting and signing of the new agreement with the University of Pavia, a document awaited for over twenty years.
At the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital he oversaw the completion and start-up of the new hospital structure with a high rate of innovation and technology – which has 1,080 beds (of which 93 in critical areas) -, transferring the former Ospedali Riuniti in 6 days.
Furthermore, still in Bergamo, as president of the FROM research foundation, he significantly expanded the activity for the support and development of clinical research in the Pope John XXXIII hospital, and activated the headquarters of the new Medicine and Surgery degree course in English language, School of Medicine and Surgery (started October 2017), in collaboration with the Bicocca University of Milan with the participation of the University of Bergamo and the University of Surrey (UK).
Again with the University of Bergamo, in February 2012 he signed an agreement for the establishment of the University’s Human Factors and Technology in Healthcare (HTH) research centre.
At the Niguarda Hospital in Milan he took his first steps in a strategic direction, first carrying out the role of medical director of the unit for five years and, subsequently, for three years, the role of medical director. He followed the construction and relocation of the new Hospital – South Block (450 beds) and managed international health cooperation projects with public funding of over 1 million euro.
