Mastrovito Andrea

Andrea Mastrovito (Bergamo, 1978) is an Italian visual artist, working across Europe and the United States and living between Bergamo and New York. His artistic practice spans drawing, sculpture, installation, video and multimedia, with an experimental approach that combines traditional techniques and digital research.

He trained at the “G. Carrara” Academy of Fine Arts in Bergamo, from which he graduated in 2001. From the outset, he has developed a body of work centred on drawing as a narrative and conceptual structure, gradually expanding this into environmental installations and complex works based on unconventional materials, such as paper, books and glass.

Throughout his career, he has exhibited at major international museums and institutions, including the MAXXI and MACRO in Rome, the MART in Rovereto, the Centre Pompidou and the Queens Museum in New York, establishing himself as a leading figure in Italian contemporary art abroad. Among his best-known works are monumental installations and video projects that reflect on memory, narrative and cultural identity.

His work has been recognised with numerous awards and grants, including the New York Prize (2007), the Moroso Prize (2012), the Ermanno Casoli Prize (2016), the Italian Council (2019), the Prix Plantagenet and the Icona Prize (2021), as well as the PAC – Plan for Contemporary Art of the Ministry of Culture (2022), all of which confirm his international standing.

The most recent and significant accolade of her career is her victory in the international competition to create the ‘Agnus Dei’ for the cross of the Tower of Jesus Christ at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona. The work, conceived as a luminous sculpture made of glass and reflective materials, will be placed at the highest point of the basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí, symbolically completing its iconographic programme.
