Giovanola Benedetta

Benedetta Giovanola is Full Professor of Ethics at the University of Macerata, Department of Political Science, Communication and International Relations. She holds the Jean Monnet Chair “Ethics for Inclusive Digital Europe”, funded by the European Commission starting from November 2022.
Prof. Giovanola is Director of the postgraduate advanced course “Digital Ethics, Law, Technologies”, jointly promoted by the University of Macerata and the Marche Polytechnic University. She is also a member of the executive committee of the postgraduate course “Cybersecurity, Cyber Risk and Data Protection”. She serves as Principal Investigator (PI) for the University of Macerata in several EU-funded projects, including EthicAI4CARE (aimed at implementing ethics “by design” in AI for the healthcare sector), the Jean Monnet Network ENDE (European Network on Digitalization and E-governance), and REINITIALISE (focused on safeguarding fundamental rights in the use of digital technologies for e-health services).
She is President and co-founder of GAIA – AI Ethics and Governance, a university spin-off and innovative startup. Since 2018, she has been a Visiting Professor at Tufts University (USA), where she teaches Media Ethics and Introduction to Philosophy. She has also taught as an Adjunct Professor of “Economic Philosophy and Business Ethics” at the Catholic University of Milan since the 2017/2018 academic year.
Since 2022, she has served as Vice President of SIFM – the Italian Society of Moral Philosophy, a role that represents significant recognition for the community of moral philosophers at the University of Macerata. The SIFM has received a Medal for Activities from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. Previously, Prof. Giovanola served as Pro-Rector and Vice-Rector for International Relations at the University of Macerata from 2016 to 2022.
Her main research interests range from digital ethics and AI ethics to media ethics, public ethics, theories of justice (social and global), economic ethics, business ethics, and corporate social responsibility. She has contributed numerous publications, including articles and volumes, on these topics.
