Gambetti Mauro

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, O.F.M. Conv., was born on October 27, 1965, in Castel San Pietro Terme (Province of Bologna). He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Bologna. In September 1992, he began his journey in the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, professing temporary vows on August 29, 1995, and solemn vows on September 20, 1998. After earning a Baccalaureate in Theology, he obtained a Licentiate in Theological Anthropology. He was ordained a priest on January 8, 2000.

He held various positions including youth and vocational ministry leader and community superior (guardian). From 2009 to 2013, he served as Minister Provincial of the Bolognese Province. From 2013 until October 31, 2020, he was the Custos General of the General Custody of the Sacred Convent of St. Francis in Assisi. In 2017, he was elected President of the Inter-Mediterranean Federation of Provincial Ministers.

On October 30, 2020, he was assigned the titular see of Tisiduo with the personal dignity of Archbishop and received episcopal consecration on November 22, 2020. Pope Francis created and proclaimed him Cardinal in the Consistory of November 28, 2020.

On February 20, 2021, he was appointed Vicar General of His Holiness for Vatican City, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, and President of the Fabric of St. Peter. On June 2, 2023, he was appointed Judge of the Court of Cassation of the Vatican City State, effective from January 1, 2024.

He is a Member of the Dicasteries for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life; for Communication; and of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican City State. Since 2021, he has served as President of the “Fratelli Tutti” Foundation.
