De Caro Mario

Mario De Caro (born September 17, 1963) is an Italian philosopher and Full Professor of Moral Philosophy at Roma Tre University. Since 2000, he has also served as a Visiting Professor at Tufts University (Massachusetts), where he teaches regularly.

After earning his degree and Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” he conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University as a Fulbright Fellow.

His research interests include moral philosophy, free will, action theory, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, history of science, and early modern philosophy. Together with David Macarthur, he developed the theory of liberal naturalism, a metaphilosophical position that seeks to reconcile naturalism with normativity.

De Caro is the author of numerous articles and books, including Il libero arbitrio. Una introduzione (Free Will: An Introduction, 2004), Azione (Action, 2008), and Realtà (Reality, 2020). He has also edited several essay collections, such as Naturalism in Question and Normativity and Naturalism.

He serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Philosophical Association and Ancient Philosophy Today, and sits on the editorial boards of various international journals. Since 2016, he has been the literary executor of Hilary Putnam.

De Caro has held significant roles in several philosophical associations, including serving as President of the Italian Society for Analytic Philosophy (2010–2012) and Vice President of the National Philosophy Council in Italy.

In addition to his academic work, De Caro contributes to major Italian newspapers such as Il Sole 24 Ore, La Repubblica, and La Stampa, and has participated in television programs on philosophical topics.

His career reflects a continuous commitment to fostering dialogue between philosophy and society, addressing complex issues with analytical rigor and an interdisciplinary approach.
