Dan Bernard

Bernard Dan was born in 1967 in Brussels, where he lives with his wife and three children. He is a paediatric neurologist, head of the department of neurology and associate medical director at the Hôpital Universitaire des Enfants Reine Fabiola, and full professor of neurophysiology and developmental neurology at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He was the 2010 President of the European Academy of Childhood Disability and currently chairs the Belgian Academy of Childhood Disability. He has great involvement with ethical thinking in the context of his university. In addition to his clinical and teaching activity, he is involved in basic research on the functioning and development of the brain. He co-authored a book on childhood disabilities (‘Handicaps et déficiences de l’enfant’, De Boeck Université, 2001), wrote a book ‘Angelman Syndrome’ (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008) and currently prepares a textbook on cerebral palsy. Aside from his professional activity, Bernard Dan recently wrote his first novel, ‘Le Livre de Joseph’ (‘The Book of Joseph’, Editions de l’Aube, 2011). Inspired by the Book of Job and recollections from the Warsaw ghetto uprising, this book addresses the construction of identity.
