Cesana Giancarlo

Born in Carate Brianza in 1948, he is a Full Professor of General and Applied Hygiene at Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca. At the same university, he directs the Center for Public Health Studies and serves as Director of the Complex Structure of Public Health at Ospedale San Gerardo dei Tintori. Previously, he was Full Professor of Occupational Medicine and served as Head of Occupational Medicine at the same hospital until 2002.
Throughout his academic career, he has focused particularly on the psychophysiology of stress and epidemiology, with a specific interest in the relationships between social factors and disease, participating in numerous national and international research projects. He is the author of over 250 scientific publications, approximately 170 of which are in peer-reviewed journals, as well as several books in the medical, cultural, and social fields, including Medicina e Società (Florence, Società Editrice Fiorentina, 2017).
He has held significant academic and institutional roles, including participation in university and national scientific councils and committees, such as CEFASS and ISPESL. He was President of the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico from 2009 to 2015.
Married to Emilia Vergani in 1975, he is the father of three children. His wife, a key figure in social assistance and founder of the association In-Presa, passed away in 2000. From the 1970s until 2005, he collaborated with don Luigi Giussani in leading the ecclesial movement Comunione e Liberazione.
For his scientific and cultural contributions, he has received several recognitions, including the Enzo Piccinini Prize for his work on medicine and caregiving relationships.
