Sergio Belardinelli

Sergio Belardinelli was born in Sassoferrato in 1952. He graduated in Philosophy from the University of Perugia in 1975 and was a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Munich between 1979 and 1980.

He held academic posts at the University of Trieste as a lecturer in the Philosophy of Work (1979–1984) and as an associate professor of the Philosophy of History (1984–1989). Subsequently, he was an associate professor at the University of Bologna (Forlì campus) from 1989 to 2000. Since 2000, he has been a full professor of Sociology of Cultural and Communication Processes at the University of Bologna, where he is currently also an Alma Mater Professor.
His main research interests focus on the ethical and political issues linked to the development of complex societies, with particular attention to bioethics, the relationship between religion and politics, cultural identity and cultural pluralism.
He has undertaken international academic activities as a visiting professor at the Katholische Universität Eichstätt (on several occasions between 1988 and 1996) and the Universidad Católica Argentina (1998).
He has given lectures at numerous universities abroad and has taken part in national and international research programmes, coordinating, amongst other things, a project on ‘Kierche und Erziehung in Europa’ (2004–2005).
He has served on important academic and institutional committees, including the National Bioethics Committee (2002–2006) and various boards of directors. He is a member of the editorial board of several academic journals.
Among the awards he has received are the Lucio Colletti Prize in 2010 for his book *L’altro Illuminismo* and the Capri San Michele Prize in 2012 author of *Sillabario per la tarda modernità*. He is a member of the Accademia Scientiarum et Artium Europea in Salzburg and a fellow of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna.
