Angelo Bagnasco

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, Archbishop Emeritus of Genoa, was born in Pontevico (Brescia) on 14 January 1943 and was ordained a priest in 1966. After holding various pastoral and academic posts in the Archdiocese of Genoa, he was appointed Bishop of Pesaro in 1998 and Archbishop in 2000. From 2003 to 2006, he served as Military Ordinary for Italy. In 2006, he became Metropolitan Archbishop of Genoa.
In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, a post he held until 2017. In the same year, he was created a Cardinal. From 2016 to 2021, he served as President of the Council of European Episcopal Conferences (CCEE). In 2020, he concluded his pastoral ministry in Genoa, becoming Archbishop Emeritus.
He took part in several Assemblies of the Synod of Bishops and in the 2013 Conclave. He was a member of various bodies of the Holy See.
