This first appointment is designed to further the dialogue that began last year with the Exhibition on Work and has continued over recent months. The first key theme to emerge concerns the question of the meaning of work. The current crisis is not merely economic or organisational: it is a crisis of meaning. But ‘crisis’ is a neutral term: it can signify loss, but it can also become an opportunity. When something breaks down, it creates space for questions we were not previously compelled to ask ourselves. In this case, the crucial question is: what is the meaning of work in a person’s life?
