Giuseppe Civardi

Surgeon, Head of the Complex Operational Unit of Internal Medicine at the Val d’Arda Hospital from 29 May 2003 to 16 January 2017. Subsequently retired following voluntary resignation.
Throughout 2017, Medical Director of the Borgonovo Val Tidone Hospice – ASP Azalea and Consultant for Outpatient Diagnostic Ultrasound at the ‘Dalla Rosa Prati’ Polyclinic and Diagnostic Centre in Parma. Since January 2018, Director of the PARE Long-Term Care Unit, S. Antonio Private Nursing Home, Piacenza.

In the past, he undertook training placements at the Cardiology Unit of Lecco Hospital, where he acquired the basic skills required for caring for cardiac patients and performing all non-invasive cardiac diagnostic procedures. From 1984 to 1990, he was a Senior Registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine at Piacenza Hospital, under the supervision of Prof. Luigi Buscarini, focusing in particular, in addition to caring for cardiac patients, on liver and gastrointestinal diseases and haematology-oncology. It was here that he acquired expertise in ultrasound and interventional ultrasound. From 1990, he served as a Senior Registrar, again at the 1st Division of Internal Medicine – Oncology – Haematology at Piacenza Hospital, which had since been headed by Dr Luigi Cavanna. During those years, he made a substantial contribution to the implementation of the bone marrow transplant programme.
He also served as head of the Operational Committee of the Piacenza Hospital Trust, within the scope of the Organisational Development, Quality and Training Unit. For several years, he was the departmental representative for Quality and Accreditation; he is also an adjunct professor at the School of Specialisation in Internal Medicine at the University of Parma.

In terms of organisation and management, he introduced a care-intensity-based care model within his clinical unit, creating an 8-bed High-Dependency Unit equipped to manage critically ill patients and implementing operational procedures and protocols for relevant conditions (sepsis/septic shock, respiratory failure requiring non-invasive mechanical ventilation, pulmonary embolism, acute renal failure, coma, severe stroke, critical cardiac conditions with the exception of STEMI, severe acute pancreatitis, and hepatorenal syndrome. He has also established a Long-Term Rehabilitation Section within the Unit, with beds dedicated to palliative care for both cancer and non-cancer patients, to provide an adequate response to the needs of the population, given the lack of hospices in the Levante District of the Piacenza Local Health Authority.

In recent years, he has devoted particular attention to palliative care and pain management in the field of internal medicine and oncology, also publishing the results of his research in international specialist journals.
