Baturi Giuseppe

Archbishop of Cagliari and General Secretary of Italian Episcopal Conference (from July 5, 2022).
His Excellency Monsignor Giuseppe Baturi was born on March 21, 1964, in Catania.
He received baptism and the other sacraments of Christian initiation in the Parish of SS. Sacramento Ritrovato in Catania, led by the Vincentian Fathers (Congregation of the Mission).
After completing his scientific high school education, he obtained a degree in Law from the University of Catania. As a seminary student, he attended the San Paolo Theological Studio in Catania, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Theology. Subsequently, at the Pontifical Gregorian University, he obtained a License in Canon Law.
He was ordained a priest on January 2, 1993, for the clergy of Catania.
After his ordination, he served as the Parish Priest of Valcorrente, a district of Belpasso (1993-2002), and as the Diocesan Treasurer (1999-2008). He also held various positions, including Episcopal Vicar for Economic Affairs, Member of the Presbyteral Council, General Procurator of the Archbishop, Vice President of the Catanese Work for Worship and Religion, Member of the Board of Directors of the Pious Work of Poor Clerics, the Pious Educational Institute “San Benedetto,” and the Committee “Regina Pacis” Association in Belpasso. He was also a Member of the Steering Committee of the Michelangelo Virgilito Foundation in Paternò. He served as the Responsible for Communion and Liberation for Sicily.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Diocesan Assistance Organization (which manages socio-assistance and rehabilitation centers), the Institute for the Blind “Ardizzone Gioeni,” and the Pious Work “Casa di Riposo Mons. Ventimiglia” and “Istituto San Benedetto.”
He taught religion at the Sant’Orsola Institute in Catania.
He has been a Chaplain of His Holiness since 2006 and the Major Canon of the Cathedral Chapter of Catania since 2012.
From 2012 until April 2019, he was the Director of the National Office for Legal Issues and Secretary of the Council for Legal Affairs of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
Since 2015, he has been the Undersecretary of the same Conference.
On Saturday, November 16, 2019, at 12:00, his appointment as Archbishop of Catania and Cagliari was announced simultaneously.
On Sunday, January 5, 2020, in the Basilica of N.S. di Bonaria in Cagliari, he was consecrated bishop by His Eminence Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, with consecrating bishops Monsignor Arrigo Miglio and Monsignor Salvatore Gristina, and he took canonical possession of the Diocese of Cagliari.
