Ucerler M. Antoni J.

M. Antoni J. Ucerler, S.J., is Director of the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History and an Associate Professor of History at Boston College. He obtained his PhD from the University of Oxford and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of England. Having entered the Society of Jesus in Italy, he was sent to Japan in 1985 and ordained a priest in 1994 in Naples. He has taught at Sophia University in Tokyo, the University of Oxford, Georgetown University, and the University of San Francisco in California. His research focuses on the history of Christianity in Japan and, more broadly, on religious and cultural encounters between Europe and East Asia in the early modern period. He is the author of The Samurai and the Cross: The Jesuit Enterprise in Early Modern Japan (Oxford University Press, 2022) and edits the series Studies in the History of Christianity in East Asia (Brill).
