Piero Cipollone

Piero Cipollone has been a Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB) since 1 November 2023. He is responsible for the Banknote Directorate, the Directorate-General for International and European Relations, and the Directorate-General for Market Infrastructure and Payments.

Before taking up his post at the ECB, he was a Member of the Executive Board and Deputy Director-General of the Bank of Italy. In that capacity, he was also a member of the Integrated Executive Board of the Italian Insurance Supervisory Authority (IVASS). He was also a member of the coordination group for the Bank for International Settlements’ Cross-border Payments Programme and, prior to that, served as Executive Director on the Executive Board of the World Bank.

After graduating in Economics from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, he obtained a Master of Arts in Economics from Stanford University and was a visiting scholar at the Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

He is the author of publications and articles that have appeared in international academic journals, including the *American Economic Review*, the *Journal of the European Economic Association* and the *Journal of Policy Modelling*.
