Kassab Joseph

Kassab is considered a community organizer and a long time advocate for human and religious rights of the Aramaic speaking Christian Chaldeans Assyrians of Iraq. His advocacy mission began when he fled his native country Iraq due to religious and ethnic persecution three decades ago as he embarked on his compassionate work by assisting Iraqi refuges stranded in Europe and the Middle East.

In the U.S., Kassab continued his education by earning a Graduate Certificate (GC) in Community Education Leadership Program from Wayne State University (under the auspices of Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) Washington D.C.) along with studying a full political science syllabus in addition to intensive courses and training in the emerging science of Nanotechnology. Kassab holds Master of Science degree in Medical Microbiology and Immunology. After serving as bio- researcher and instructor at the School of Medicine, Wayne State University for more than 25 years, he is now Chief Science Officer and Principal of a Nano-Biotech company named Nano Engineering and Consulting Co. www.nano-consultant.com providing engineering services, training, and consulting on nanoscale products

Kassab with using his own money made 13 Chaldean American Humanitarian conditions assessment visits to displaced Iraqis in Iraq and those stranded in transit countries to ensure relief providing and to discuss their plight with the world leaders, including a meeting in the Vatican with Pope John Paul II in 1994. Also, he led many Iraqi Christians advocacy delegations offering consultations to officials of Department of State, U.S Sent Sub-Committee on Immigration and Refugees Resettlement, UNHCR in Geneva-Switzerland, and to many faith-based Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). In addition, he wrote many expert witness affidavits to US Immigration Courts and to Pro Bono legal clinics in support of Iraqi Christian Asylum cases. At the invitation of US Dept. of Homeland Security, Mr. Kassab continues to provide consultation and training to US Asylum officers. As community leader, Mr. Kassab was selected to participate in a Wayne State University Center of Academic Excellence sponsored Intelligence Community Heritage Summit to strengthen alliance with heritage communities and academia. For the last two years Kassab has been serving as member of US Office of Director on National Inelegance (ODNI) Heritage Community Liaison Council. In 2003, Kassab became instrumental in introducing “the Art of Governance (AOG)” by serving as an advisor to the Policy Institute for Religion and State in Washington D.C. At both, the first and second Iraqi elections he actively worked to promote this democratic process among Iraqi people in the Diaspora and in Iraq.

In year 2005, Kassab led the Chaldean Federation of America (CFA) to join the membership of the Refugee Council USA (RCUSA) based in Washington as NGO. In May 2003, he traveled across Iraq, where in Baghdad met with Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) Administrator Paul Bremer and many of Iraq’s religious/ethnic leaders and technocrats. After his return, he met with the National Security Advisor Deputies, Dept. of State, Pentagon and CPA officials to promote Iraqis minorities’ political future

In year 2005, Kassab was profiled among nine men and women in America’s Table; a Thanksgiving Reader published by the American Jewish Committee and New York Times for being part of the American Story. He is the winner of three humanitarian. Also, he is the recipient of the Community Education Leadership Program award and the appreciation award for the Year Best Ethnic Group Participation in the U.S Census 1990 and 2000. He is also the winner of the 2008 Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce humanitarian award. Kassab was recognized for his leadership by being appointed commissioner for three years term to the Citizens Corps Council for Emergency Preparedness (CCCEP) of Farmington Hills, Michigan.

As Executive Director of the Chaldean Federation of America www.chaldeanfederation.org , he spearheaded a massive resettlement initiative called Operation-R4 (Research, Relief, Resettlement, and Re-empowerment) to assist more than 400,000 displaced Christians inside and outside Iraq. The initiative is also devised to help new comers to integrate and assimilate in the new society to become good Americans

Kassab along with the support of other prominent Chaldean Assyrian American community leaders founded a national advocacy organization named: Chaldean Assyrian Syriac Council of America (CASCA) to represent and to defend the rights of Iraq’s Christian Chaldeans Assyrians. In March 2008, Kassab Jointed CASCA’s facts finding Task force traveled to Iraq to assess the situation and to collect factual data on the many needs of the Religious and Ethnic Minorities and the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Northern Iraq.

In April 2008, Mr. Kassab spoke and recited a prayer in Aramaic on behalf of the Iraqi Christians and Church at the 5th Annual National Catholic Prayer Breakfast where he followed President George W. Bush address to more than 3,500 prominent Catholics guests event.
In April 2008, Kassab testified to the first briefing of the Congressional Caucus for Middle Eastern religious Minorities held on the Capitol Hill. In June 2008, Mr. Kassab made an extensive presentation on the plight of Iraqi Christians in Vienna, Austria at the Vienna Forum 2008 “Post-Christian Europe and Resurgent Islam”

Mr. Kassab as a guest speaker continues to make worldwide speeches on the right and plight of the Iraqi Christians and other oppressed minorities.
Over the years, Mr. Kassab has been a guest of local media outlets (WXYZ, WJBK, WDIV, WWJ, WDET, WNZK, WJR) and national (ABC, CBS, FOX, CNN, EWTN, NPR “national and local”, PBS) and quoted on pages of (Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, Southfield Eccentric, Oakland Press, Wall Street Journal, Times, Washington Post, NY Times, Catholic News Agency, Catholic News Services, San Antonio Express, Boston Globe, LA Times, AP). Also interviewed by international media outlets (Hokkaido Shimbun Press, Finish TV, ANSA Italian New Agency, BBC, ZENIT, Major Arabic TV and news networks: Al-Hura, AL-Iraqia, Aljazeera) and many more.
