Professor Michael Bailey is Professor of Surgery in the Postgraduate Medical School at the University of Surrey and Honorary Consultant Surgeon at The Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust.
He was one of the instigators of minimal access surgery in the UK and Europe and created the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (MATTU) at The Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust in 1993.
Since that time, the MATTU has achieved a national and international reputation for the teaching of laparoscopic surgery at all levels. MATTU has an active research programme for MD and PhD Fellows.
Professor Bailey has held numerous national posts including Presidency of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland and of the Section of Surgery at The Royal Society of Medicine. He is a past examiner in surgery for the Intercollegiate Board of The Royal Colleges and a previous invited member of Council of The Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was Secretary to the Court of Examiners of the College and an examiner in the Primary and Final FRCS. He was also external examiner for The Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow. He was Tutor in Minimal Access Surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Trustee of the Surgical Foundation of The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland.
He was a member of the Executive Board of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery and Chairman of the Publications Committee. He was a Specialist Advisor to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for the Interventional Procedures Programme.
He has been an invited speaker in numerous European countries, the USA, Africa, Australia, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, West Indies, Japan, Peru, Sri Lanka and many other parts of the world.
He is Vice President and a founder member of the European Association of Transluminal Surgery and he is Chairman and Director of Advanced Laparoscopic Courses at IRCAD Strasbourg.
He is a member of the WebSurg Scientific Committee. He is Chairman of Advanced Digestive Courses at AIMS Academy in Milan.
He is an Honorary member of the Academy of Surgeons of Peru and of the South African Society of Endoscopic Surgeons; he is also a member of the Society of Surgeons of New Jersey, USA. He was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medal at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman.
He was Hunterian Professor of The Royal College of Surgeons of England and twice won the Moynihan Price and Medal of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. In 2014 he was awarded the Cheselden Medal by The Royal College of Surgeons of England for outstanding service to British Surgery.
He was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Legion d’Honneur by President Sarkozy at the Élysée Palace in March 2012 for his services to minimal access surgery.
