Graziano Delrio was born in 1960 in Reggio Emilia and grows at Rosta Vecchia. He obtains a Degree in Medicine in Modena University specializing in Endocrinology with studies in USA, UK ad Israel. He worked in the University Policlinic as Researcher.
He marries Anna Maria and has nine children.
In the Nineties he took part in the initiatives of Father Dossetti’s Committees for the defense of the Constitution and he founds the Association “Giorgio La Pira”, engaged to promote the peace in Middle East.
In 1999 he becomes active in politics as City Council Member in Reggio Emilia. In 2000 he is elected in the Regional Council, where he chairs the Welfare Commission. He also holds the role of Provincial Secretary of Margherita Party.
In 2004 he is elected Mayor Reggio Emilia in the first ballot, supported by a coalition of parties of the left and center politic area.
He promotes the urban upgrading of the town, empowers the policies for education and sustainability, among which the selective waste collection and the extension plan of the bicycle lanes.
He is re-elected Mayor in 2009, Democratic Party candidate for the coalition of parties of the left and center wing. He calls the State General for the Northern area of the town, for the design and implementation of AV Mediopadana Station, the International Center for Education “Loris Malaguzzi” and the Tecnopolo (technical hub) of research. He identifies Reggio Emilia as the “Town of Peolple” and accounts for the implemented policies in “Town of people. Emilia region, Italy and a new idea of good governance”, Donzelli, 2011.
He chairs the campaign to reform the law on citizenship “L’Italia sono anch’io” promoted by twenty national associations.
He is elected President of ANCI – National Association of Italian Mayors – in the Congress held in October 2011 in Brindisi.
On April 28th 2013 he is appointed Minister for Regional Affairs and Autonomies in the Government chaired by Enrico Letta, holding afterward also the mandate for Sport.
In the Government chaired by Matteo Renzi, from February 22nd 2014 he is Undersecretary of the Prime Minister, acting as Secretary of the Council and mandate to the Territorial Cohesion and Sport. In “Cambiando l’Italia”, 2015, edited by Marsilio, he describes the objectives and the actions he started with Renzi.
He is appointed Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports on April 2nd 2015 and he is confirmed in Gentiloni Government from 12th December 2016.
In the Political Elections of March 4th 2018 Graziano Delrio has been elected in the Chamber of Deputies, PD candidate for the Coalition of parties of the left and center politic area (PD, + Europa, Insieme, Civici Popolari), in the single-member constituency of Reggio Emilia, Cavriago, Correggio, Rubiera and San Martino in Rio.
On March 27th 2018 he was elected President of the Democratic Party Group in the Chamber of Deputies.
