Born in 1945 in Salerno, Giovanni Canzio graduated in Law from the University Federico II of Naples in 1966.
Canzio entered the Magistracy in 1970, serving first at the Court of Vicenza, and then at the Court of Rieti. In 1995 he was assigned to the Court of Cassation, where held several positions, including adviser of the Court of Cassation from the First Criminal Division and from the Joint Criminal Sections, as well as the Director of the Office of “Massimario e del Ruolo,” (the office that systematically analyses the legitimacy of the court).
In 2009 Canzio returned to the jurisdiction of merit, first as President of the Appellate Court of Aquila and later, beginning in 2011, as President of the Appellate Court of Milan. Since January 7th, 2016 he has serves as the First President of the Court of Cassation.
President Giovanni Canzio has also carried out an intense activities in the academia, as an author of studies in the field of criminal law and criminal proceedings and as a professor of the Judiciary system at the Catholic University of Milan. He has particularly contributed to the organization of the judicial structures as both a president and a member of various reform commissions.
