President of the Regional Government

Giovanni Toti born in Viareggio on September 7, 1968 is an Italian politician and journalist, president of the Liguria Region since June 11, 2015. His career in journalism began in 1996 in Mediaset, registered as a professional journalist in Lombardy since 1999, in 2006 he collaborated with Videonews, head of Mediaset in-depth programs. For two years, from 2007 to 2009, he was deputy general manager of Mediaset Group Communications. In 2010 he was appointed Director of Studio Aperto and later also of TG4. In 2014 he entered politics and in April was a candidate with Forza Italia in the European elections in the Northwest Italy constituency: he obtained more than 148,000 preferences and became an MEP, thus ending his experience in Mediaset. In 2015 he ran for the presidency of the Liguria Region, supported by the entire center-right coalition and his orange civic list “GIOVANNI TOTI LIGURIA.” On May 31, with 34.44 percent of the vote, he was elected president and from July was also appointed vice president of the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces. After Liguria’s victory, the coalition and the Toti Model won many other municipalities at each election round. Following the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa on August 14, 2018, he was appointed by the government as Delegate Commissioner for the Emergency. In 2019 he broke away from Forza Italia and founded the political party Cambiamo!, of which he is leader. In the September 2020 regional elections in Liguria, he ran again for president and won, getting 56.13 percent of the valid votes, beating center-left candidate Ferruccio Sansa, his main opponent, who got 38.90 percent.
