talian economist and politician (b. Rome 1957). After graduating in 1981 in Economics and Commerce at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, in 1982 he was a researcher at the National Institute of Statistics (Istat). From 1989 to 1991 he was research manager at the National Institute for the Study of the Conjuncture (ISCO) and since 2002 he has been professor of Economic Statistics at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. From 2001 to 2009 he was Chief Statistician and Director of the Statistics Directorate of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and from 2009 to 2013 president of Istat. From 28 April 2013 to 22 February 2014 he was Minister of Labor and Social Policies in the Letta government. In 2014 he was awarded the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In 2020 he was appointed member of the Committee of experts in economic and social matters, set up by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, to deal with the so-calledphase 2″ of the emergency linked to Covid-19. From 13 February 2021 to 22 October 2022 he was Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility in the Draghi government.
