Nello Cristianini

Nello Cristianini is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bath, where he conducts research on large-scale analysis of multimedia content, including news and social media, using advanced Artificial Intelligence methods, as well as on the social impact of Big Data and AI. He earned a degree in Physics from the University of Trieste, a Master’s in Computational Intelligence from Royal Holloway, University of London, and a PhD from the University of Bristol. Previously, he held academic positions as Professor at the University of Bristol and Professor of Statistics at the University of California, Davis.
Cristianini is the author of numerous books and scientific articles. Among his most notable works are internationally recognized texts on machine learning, including An Introduction to Support Vector Machines and Kernel Methods for Pattern Analysis, as well as Introduction to Computational Genomics in the field of bioinformatics. In Italy, he has published the trilogy La Scorciatoia (Mulino, 2023), Machina Sapiens (Mulino, 2024), and Sovrumano (Mulino, 2025).
He has been recognized among the most influential researchers in Machine Learning by AMiner, received the prestigious Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, and holds an ERC Advanced Grant. He has delivered high-profile international lectures, including a STOA Lecture at the European Parliament, contributing significantly to scientific dissemination and critical analysis of the social effects of AI.
His work combines scientific rigor, technological innovation, and attention to ethical and social implications of AI, making him an internationally recognized authority in machine learning and applied bioinformatics.
