Giacomo is thirty-five years old, lives in Busto Arsizio, and works as an export sales manager for a company that produces valves for the oil & gas sector. It is a job he loves and one that takes him around the world. But if you ask him what his true passion is, the answer will take you far away from industrial valves and seat you around a table. Giacomo is a huge board game enthusiast, a passion that for several years now has become the foundation of one of the liveliest and noisiest areas of the Fair: the Children’s Village.<\/p>\n

His connection with the Meeting goes back a long way. Twenty years ago, when he was in high school, he began volunteering in cleaning and catering. But it is over the past four years that his presence in Rimini has taken on a new form. He was invited to bring his expertise in the world of games into the Children’s Village, following the intuition of offering children the same educational proposal addressed to their parents, seeing them as the protagonists of tomorrow’s Meeting.<\/p>\n

Since then, Giacomo’s games area has grown: covering more than 200 square meters, it can host up to 130 children at the same time and, on the busiest days, records as many as one thousand visits. The board games, modern and with few rules, are designed to involve families.<\/p>\n

Building a place for everyone<\/h3>\n

For Giacomo, building the Meeting does not begin and end in August; it is a year-round effort. It means trying out new games, building relationships with publishers who support the area with their materials, and involving lifelong friends in shifts at the Fair. But why devote so much time and energy to this work?<\/p>\n

Giacomo’s answer is as simple as it is profound: “A teacher once told me that we are responsible for what moves us. For me, that is exactly it: what I am passionate about, I want to be for everyone. I want something beautiful to be able to arise from it, such as new relationships and opportunities. The greatest satisfaction is seeing the enthusiasm and gratitude of children and parents when I explain a game.”<\/p>\n

A good that generates gratuitousness<\/h3>\n

This desire to share beauty makes the Meeting, according to Giacomo, a precious good for the whole world. In an age when everything seems calculated, something different happens in Rimini. Giacomo tells this through the story of Andrea, a fourteen-year-old boy from Rome.<\/p>\n

“Over the past four years, he always came to the Fair with his family and spent his days playing with us. Then, last year, after seeing some boys just a little older than him helping us manage 50 children enrolled in our tournaments, he came up to me and said: ‘Next year I don’t want to come and play anymore; I want to come and help you.’ I had never asked him to.” This is what the Meeting is for: it is a place where a young person discovers that true beauty blossoms when you become personally involved.<\/p>\n

A work to be supported<\/h3>\n

In light of all this, supporting the Meeting and investing time, holidays — Giacomo plans his company vacation days around the week in Rimini — and resources becomes a natural consequence. “In life, I am fascinated by people who build beautiful things,” Giacomo concludes. “The Meeting teaches people to build gratuitously. It is something absolutely valuable and fundamental, something worth investing in. Out of 52 weeks in the year, that one is indispensable for me.”<\/p>\n

And to explain the “miracle” of this gratuitousness, Giacomo recalls a provocation he heard last year during the introductory meeting for volunteers: “We were told: ‘Everyone says that at the Meeting they always receive more than they give. But if everyone receives more, then who is giving?’ It was a question that struck me, because objectively something beautiful happens there, something that goes far beyond our making ourselves available, but that, in order to happen, absolutely needs our availability.”<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
