Saint Charles and His Passion for Humanity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"47\" data-end=\"362\">When the Bishop of Novara died, Saint Charles was only 46 years old, but already exhausted from his labors, fasting, and illness. Someone told him the news almost as a reproach: <em data-start=\"225\" data-end=\"297\">\u201cThat priest died because he didn\u2019t know how to take care of himself.\u201d<\/em> But Charles calmly replied, <em data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"362\">\u201cThat is how a bishop should die.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"364\" data-end=\"707\">Everyone who met Saint Charles was struck by his strength, his tenacity, his tireless drive to build. His friend, Saint Philip Neri, once asked: <em data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"538\">\u201cIs this man made of iron?\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"541\" \/>And yet his body was frail, weakened by constant penance\u2014and even by bullets lodged in his flesh after an assassination attempt.<br data-start=\"669\" data-end=\"672\" \/>But he was strong because he loved.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"1394\">It all began when Charles was 22 years old. At that time, he was considered the true power behind the Church: the Pope\u2019s nephew, his closest and most influential collaborator, holding multiple offices, privileges, and responsibilities. His rise seemed unstoppable\u2014until suddenly, everything changed.<br data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1011\" \/>Charles was deeply shaken by the death of his brother, who, like him, was at the height of worldly success.<br data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1121\" \/>He met Father Ribera and realized that the salvation of his soul mattered more than anything else in the world. From that moment on, he began a life of prayer and penance.<br data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1295\" \/>He became a priest for the people\u2014a shepherd, a guide, and a companion for everyone he encountered.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1855\">He was the soul of the Tridentine reform: he founded seminaries, reformed religious congregations, and initiated many charitable works.<br data-start=\"1531\" data-end=\"1534\" \/>Above all, he was a priest close to the people, showing through his own life that there can be no passion for Christ without passion for humanity.<br data-start=\"1680\" data-end=\"1683\" \/>When the plague broke out in Milan, he did not flee but personally tended to the sick.<br data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"1772\" \/>He often repeated: <em data-start=\"1791\" data-end=\"1855\">\u201cJesus suffered much more for us\u2014let us repay love with love.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"2207\">He never stopped. He visited every parish in his diocese\u2014the largest in the world\u2014twice.<br data-start=\"1945\" data-end=\"1948\" \/>He usually scheduled his visits during the hottest months because, as he said, <em data-start=\"2027\" data-end=\"2092\">\u201cIt is beautiful to do good on the days many dedicate to rest.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2092\" data-end=\"2095\" \/>And since the stifling afternoon heat invites sleep, he would travel during those hours so as not to waste time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2209\" data-end=\"2643\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The holiness of Charles shone like a light in the darkness of the Protestant crisis, political struggles, and widespread poverty.<br data-start=\"2338\" data-end=\"2341\" \/>From him we learn that there can be no true change in the world without a conversion of the heart, and no reform of the Church without personal reform.<br data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2495\" \/>This is why our times, though difficult, are beautiful: because it is clear that the fragile human self is the only true starting point for renewal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the Bishop of Novara died, Saint Charles was only 46 years old, but already exhausted from his labors, fasting, and illness.
