That\u2019s how it is and how it will be. And this is the weight of it all,\u201d<\/strong> writes Romano Guardini in <em data-start=\"399\" data-end=\"423\">Portrait of Melancholy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"426\" data-end=\"843\">This exhibition arises from the great questions that the human condition\u2014made of need and expectation\u2014inevitably provokes.<br data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"551\" \/>Issues surrounding illness and caregiving have often been explored more powerfully not through written words, but through the artistic gaze.<br data-start=\"691\" data-end=\"694\" \/>From here comes the decision to highlight a vast yet little-known heritage through images, particularly from works created in the last few centuries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"845\" data-end=\"1424\">In the undeniable allure of masterpieces by artists such as Chagall, Matisse, Metsu, Picasso, Goya, Munch, and Van Gogh, one can perceive an ideal thread running through them: a documentation of a <em data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1061\">positive judgment<\/em> that emerges through the drama of the human condition.<br data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1119\" \/>It is a positivity that is neither obvious nor predictable\u2014especially when one considers that the desire to be healed so often finds no complete fulfillment.<br data-start=\"1276\" data-end=\"1279\" \/>The only healings depicted in the artworks are, in fact, <em data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1346\">miracles<\/em>.<br data-start=\"1347\" data-end=\"1350\" \/>Medical science, more often than not, can only record its own limitations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1735\">Yet within the limits and fragility of the human being, the artist\u2019s eye perceives something that even doctors are sometimes unaware of: a <em data-start=\"1565\" data-end=\"1583\">human solidarity<\/em> expressed in gestures of friendship and sharing; an <em data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"1650\">epic of care<\/em> for the sick; a <em data-start=\"1667\" data-end=\"1703\">dignity in the scientific response<\/em> that ennobles the human effort.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"2177\"><strong data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1811\">\u201cIn death, I am exposed to absolute violence, to murder in the night,\u201d<\/strong> writes Emmanuel L\u00e9vinas.<br data-start=\"1836\" data-end=\"1839\" \/>There is nothing beautiful about suffering\u2014and never will be.<br data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"1903\" \/>But one must also recognize that the very idea of beauty was profoundly transformed with the advent of Christian culture.<br data-start=\"2024\" data-end=\"2027\" \/>The figure of Christ, suffering and crucified, ennobled suffering and death themselves, to the point of making them worthy of artistic representation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2179\" data-end=\"2478\">European culture\u2014and even more so its art\u2014echoed for centuries Plato\u2019s affirmation that <em data-start=\"2267\" data-end=\"2303\">\u201cbeauty is the splendor of truth.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2303\" data-end=\"2306\" \/>Thus, even the most humble, wretched, and dramatic condition can become a source of wonder and beauty, when it reveals the emergence of a value, a dignity that is absolute.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2829\">In this way, during the medieval period, a new task for medicine began to emerge: to bear witness to the perfection of the world through love for the imperfection of man\u2014who possesses an absolute value that neither illness nor death can erase.<br data-start=\"2723\" data-end=\"2726\" \/>And <em data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2770\">art gives visibility to this awareness<\/em>, restoring the original link between action and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2831\" data-end=\"2915\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetingrimini.org\/mostra-itinerante\/curare-e-guarire-occhio-artistico-e-occhio-clinico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"2831\" data-end=\"2915\" data-is-last-node=\"\">THIS EXHIBITION IS AVAILABLE IN A TRAVELING FORMAT.
