Zerbini Marcos

Marcos, born in São Paulo, Brazil, has been involved in movements defending landless workers living in the favelas of São Paulo since the late 1980s. Together with Cleuza Ramos, he founded the Associaçào dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra (Landless Workers’ Association). In just a few years, he helped 100,000 people to buy land and live in their own homes for the first time. On 24 February 2008, in front of 50,000 people, Marcos and Cleuza handed over the Sem Terra movement to Julián Carrón, head of Communion and Liberation. Marcos is also involved in politics and is currently a member of the São Paulo state parliament.
