President of Jacques Delors Institute since July 2016.
He was President of the Cabinet of Ministers of Italy from April 2013 to February 2014, and he has been participating in the political life of Italy since the 1990s, serving in several roles, including Minister for Community Policies and Minister of Industry, Commerce and Crafts.
He was a member of the Italian Parliament and then of the European Parliament. He was again in the Italian Parliament in 2006-2008 and from May 2007 to May 2008 he was Undersecretary of State to the President of the Cabinet of Ministers. In November 2009 he was elected sole Vice-Secretary of the Democratic Party.
He has been general secretary of Arel since 1993, and since March 2016 he has been Senior Advisor of the US geopolitical analysis center Eurasia group.
He has authored several books – the latest, Going together, going far, released in 2015 – and essays in collective volumes. Ha has served as professor in several Italian and international institutes.
