European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, he was President of the Council of Ministers from December 2016 to June 2018. Before becoming prime minister he was Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the Renzi government; during the second Prodi government instead he was Minister of Communications.
In 2001 he was Coordinator of the Ulivo campaign for the political elections and in the same year he was elected to Parliament; he was Chairman of the Bicameral Supervisory Commission on Rai.
In 2007 he was a member of the Committee of 45 founders of the Democratic Party.
In March 2019 he was elected President of the National Assembly by an absolute majority. He resigned when he became European Commissioner.
