Deputy GOvernon Bank of Italy

Born in 1962, Piero Cipollone is Italian, married, and has two children. 

 He is a member of the Directorate and Deputy Director General of the Bank of Italy since January 1, 2020 (Presidential Decree of January 10, 2020). In this role, he is also a member of the integrated Directorate of the Institute for the Supervision of Insurance (IVASS). 

 After graduating in Economics from the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” he obtained a Master of Arts in Economics from Stanford University. In 2001, he was a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley. 

 In 1993, he joined the Bank of Italy and was assigned to the Economic Research Department, where he worked for 15 years. He started as an economist in the Balance of Payments Office and in 2004, he became the head of the Labor Market Office. In 2007, he was appointed as Commissioner and later President of the research institute INVALSI, a position he held until 2011. From 2010 to October 2014, he served as an Executive Director at the World Bank representing Italy, Albania, Greece, Malta, Portugal, San Marino, and Timor-Leste. He also served as the Chairman of the Audit Committee. 

 After returning to the Bank of Italy, he became the Head of the Planning and Control Department in November 2014. 

Piero Cipollone is the author and co-author of numerous articles and papers on international trade, labor economics, and education economics published in various academic journals, including the American Economic Review and the Journal of the European Economic Association. He has taught economics at Luiss University in Rome and the University of L’Aquila. 

From January 1, 2017, to September 30, 2019, he served as the Deputy Head of the Budget and Control Department, which later became the Monetary Circulation and Budget Department in September 2017. From September 2018 to September 2019, he was a consultant to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers for economic affairs. 

 From October 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019, he held the position of General Official with the responsibility of providing high-level advice to the Directorate for the organization of the Bank’s functions and institutional relations.
