In a cell of an Italian prison, three men: an old Sicilian, a former mafia hitman; a young North African, framed for drug trafficking; and a middle-aged man—perhaps Jewish—mysterious and cultured, imprisoned for a moment of madness.
What unites—and what dividesthese three men, who come from different shores of the Mediterranean and find themselves sharing a tiny cell to atone for such different crimes?
Written first-hand by Ignazio De Francesco, an expert on prisons and the Middle East, and adapted for the stage by Alessandro Berti, “Joseph & Bros” shuffles the deck of stereotypes, lifting the veil of the present to speak of ancient Middle Eastern brotherhoods, problematic faiths and identities, and the responsibility one must take on—as a subject—toward historical truth. All of this is set against the backdrop of prison as a litmus test of society as a whole, as an accelerator of emotions, ideas, and conflicts—each of which the three must ultimately face.

Directed by Gaia Raffiotta, assistant director Caterina Baldini, technical direction by Massimiliano Ferrari, visuals by Daniela Neri.A Casavuota production. With the support of the Comitato Regionale per le Onoranze ai caduti di Marzabotto, Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, and AVoC.With the patronage of the Comune di Pianoro.
