SOCIAL MEDIA AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: NO SCREEN NEEDED TO GROW SMART

Luca Botturi, Professor of Media in Education, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI); Alberto Pellai, psychotherapist, writer, and essayist; On the occasion of the video meeting intervention by Maryanne Wolf, UCLA University and member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Introduction and moderation by Fabio Mercorio, Professor of Computer Science, University of Milan Bicocca and Foundation for Subsidiarity

Over the past two decades, digital development has radically transformed every aspect of our daily lives: always-connected digital devices, the spread of social platforms, and the evolution of personalized information algorithms permeate our lives, often without us being fully aware. In such a scenario, digital devices are the container, not the content, which today is selected, processed, and often generated by Artificial Intelligence algorithms. The society that lies ahead of us is one where human interaction will increasingly be mediated by digital devices connected to complex and opaque services managed by global companies. It is therefore crucial to develop not only critical thinking – the result of understanding the object concerning its purpose – but also adequate skills to face the future. This meeting hosts a dialogue between a computer scientist, a developmental psychologist, and a digital education expert, to help us shed light on the educational task that awaits us. We want to first better understand the technologies around us, then discuss, based on the scientific evidence of recent years, the interaction between minors and screens, and the role of society, parents, and schools in educating to live well in a digitalized world.

DEBT SUSTAINABILITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

In collaboration with the Foundation for Subsidiarity Fabio Panetta, Governor of the Bank of Italy. Introduction by Giorgio Vittadini, President of the Foundation for Subsidiarity

Public accounts in the red, the lowest salaries in Europe, struggling entrepreneurial fabric, demographic winter. These are shadows over the future of our country. What kind of development are we heading towards? Will the welfare state continue to be an integral part of it? Among the tools to relaunch growth, what role can technology, the common European debt, and the credit system play?

BETWEEN IMAGES AND LIGHTS: A DIALOGUE BETWEEN CINEMA AND ANIMATION

Michelangelo Frisoni, digital effects artist for cinema and VFX Lead compositor; Alessandro Jacomini, Director of Photography Lighting & Lighting Department Craft Leader at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Introduction by Daniele Federico, CEO and co-founder of Toolchefs Ltd

Since the first drawings in caves, humans have always been fascinated by telling and listening to stories. Today, the stories told on the big screen are created by an army of technicians and artists to allow the viewer a total immersion in imaginary or realistic worlds through special effects. Starting from our first encounter with this art form, we want to question what our creativity means in another's work and storytelling for our lives.

A Journey to the Holy Land (LEV). Introduction by Otello Cenci, Head of Performances of the Meeting Foundation for Friendship among Peoples ETS

IF WE ARE NOT AFTER THE ESSENCE, THEN WHAT ARE WE AFTER?

Adrien Candiard, member of the Dominican Institute of Oriental Studies (Ideo). Introduction by Bernhard Scholz, President of the Meeting Foundation for Friendship among Peoples ETS

Numerous and incisive are the questions that arise from the growing existential uncertainty of many young and not-so-young people, the fragmentation of social life, an unreliable future, and the increase in conflict and increasingly atrocious wars. Too often, those who let themselves be defined by these and other problems respond with distraction or resignation or with ideological aggression and stubbornness. But is it possible to find a horizon of meaning that allows us to face these challenges constructively, to find creative answers? It is in response to this emergency that we chose as the title of the 45th Rimini Meeting the provocation launched by the American author Cormac McCarthy: " If we are not after the essence, then what are we after".

IF YOU WANT PEACE, PREPARE FOR PEACE

Visvaldas Kulbokas, Apostolic Nuncio in Kyiv; Oleksandra Matviycuk, Ukrainian lawyer, Nobel Peace Prize 2022; Angelo Moretti, spokesperson for the European Movement for Nonviolent Action (Mean); Lali Liparteliani, Ukrainian NGO Emmaus; Anastasia Zolotova, Director of Ukrainian NGO Emmaus. Introduced by Giuseppe Frangi, journalist for Vita.

"If you want peace, prepare for peace," wrote Don Primo Mazzolari, and peace is not something to be pursued after the war, but rather a task to be undertaken during it, and especially during the war. Peace, as we have learned during these nearly two and a half terrible years, years in which bombs rain down every day, is also prepared during the war with physical presence, with an embrace, with aid, with the construction of a beautiful and connected bomb shelter, even when the electricity does not work, by bringing together Italian mayors with Ukrainian mayors, and by praying for peace alongside representatives of all religions in Lviv and Kyiv. Ending the war is not within our power, but building peace is, and that is something we can do. As Pope John XXIII's Pacem in Terris reminds us, peace is not just the absence of conflict but is based on four pillars: the exercise of truth, justice, freedom, and solidarity. The same pillars on which peace is built.
With this meeting, we intend to hear testimonies that tell us how peace is being prepared in times of war in Ukraine.

FROM NEED TO INTEGRATION

Marco Ceresa, Group CEO Randstad; Matteo Piantedosi, Minister of the Interior; Alberto Sinigallia, President of Progetto Arca Onlus Foundation. Moderation by Angelo Picariello, journalist at Avvenire

The latest ISTAT Report 2024 presents an overall unpromising picture: in 2023, the incidence of absolute poverty reached 8.5% among families and 9.8% among individuals: this amounts to 2,235,000 families and 5,752,000 people in poverty. The impact of inflation, which has hit low-income families more severely, has also contributed to the deterioration. Levels never reached in the last ten years in a country marked by increasing inequalities. The round table aims to promote a vision of community welfare with the aim of finding constructive answers to the needs of the community and citizens.

POLICIES AND STRATEGIES FOR A CHANGING JOB

In collaboration with Cdo

Marina Calderone, Minister of Labor and Social Policies; Marco Hannappel, President and CEO of Philip Morris Italy; Bernardo Mattarella, CEO of Invitalia; Eliana Viviano, Head of the Labor Market Division, Department of Economics and Statistics, Bank of Italy. Introduction by Andrea Dellabianca, President of the Compagnia delle Opere

While employment has reached record levels in Italy, institutions, companies, and intermediary bodies must continue to question how to engage marginalized groups, especially women and NEETs, and how to make work more productive. In this context, training and skills play a fundamental role in promoting growth, reducing the gap between labor supply and demand, and stimulating innovation, especially in a phase of great technological transformation as imposed by artificial intelligence. At the same time, companies are confronted with a constantly evolving scenario regarding the balance between private life and professional commitment, welfare measures, continuous training, and inclusiveness, aspects that are increasingly relevant for workers, particularly the new generations.

LIVE LONGER, LIVE BETTER? WELFARE AT A CROSSROADS

Organized by the Foundation for Subsidiarity
Gabriele Fava, President of Inps; Sabina Nuti, Rector of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna of Pisa; H.E. Mons. Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life; Giorgio Vittadini, President of the Foundation for Subsidiarity. Moderation by Enrico Castelli and Irene Elisei

The universalistic welfare system, with health services, assistance to the most vulnerable and needy, education for all, regardless of income, can no longer guarantee a quality response to citizens' needs. The 2024 Talk of the Foundation for Subsidiarity addresses the issue by looking at the most concrete aspects, such as the care of the elderly, nurseries, and reception. The first episode outlines the context starting from the assumption that welfare is the basis for the integral development of a country and must be preserved not only for the well-being of citizens but also because it contains the source code of public happiness and democracy.

SOLIDITY OF NODES AND MOBILITY OF NETWORKS

Arrigo Giana, CEO of ATM; Marco Piuri, General Director of FNM Group; Matteo Salvini, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport; Angelo Sticchi Damiani, President of ACI; Giampiero Strisciuglio, CEO of RFI; Roberto Tomasi, CEO of Autostrade per l’Italia. Moderated by Emmanuele Forlani, Director of the Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples Foundation ETS

There is a tangible connection between physical infrastructure (with its nodes and morphological peculiarities) and the local networks of relationships that compose communities and constitute true networks of proximity, resilience, and solidarity. This highlights how the role of mobility actors is central to the development of territories, both socially and economically. Physical networks as a prerequisite for social and relational networks.

IT IS GOOD THAT THE FAMILY IS NOT ALONE. SUPPORTING ALIVE ALLIANCES

In collaboration with the associative network “Ditelo sui tetti”

Mario Bolzan, Professor of Social Statistics, University of Padua; Elena Donazzan, Member of the European Parliament; Maria Gloria Riva, biblical scholar, writer; Giuseppe Salvato, Vice President of the Association Nonni 2.0; Luigi Sbarra, Secretary General of CISL. Moderation by Domenico Menorello, associative network “Ditelo sui tetti”

Many young people who want to start a family are forced to face significant problems that make it difficult to achieve this desire. Statistics themselves show that young families need companionship for this vocation. Overcoming the demographic winter requires vital alliances, such as with the generations of grandparents, in the workplace, in educational and school paths. And to promote this type of "alliances," some subsidiary reform proposals can become an important lever.

Riccardo Capecchi, president of Lottomatica Foundation; Giacomo Perletti, founder of Contrada Bricconi; Paolo Prosperi, priest of the Fraternity of St. Charles Borromeo. Moderation by Francesco Cassese, Management Consultant, Miror Consulting

In today's society, work life is often conceived as a continuous performance, leading individuals to self-consumption that inevitably results in burnout. LIGHT AND DARKNESS. THE CUSTODY OF THE HOLY PLACES AND THE PATH OF MEETING

Organized by Pro Terra Sancta

Carla Benelli, art historian, responsible for the cultural heritage conservation projects of the Pro Terra Sancta Association; Alessandro Coniglio, Professor of Old Testament Exegesis, Studium Biblicum Franciscanum, Jerusalem; Vincenzo Zuppardo, architect and curator of the exhibition. Moderation by Andrea Avveduto, Head of Communication for Pro Terra Sancta

A meeting to tell and rediscover the value of the custody of the Holy Places in the Middle East. One hundred years after the construction of the basilicas of Mount Tabor and Gethsemane, we want to reflect on the conservation of cultural heritage and the custody of the basilicas as a sign of Christian hope, in addition to the involvement of local craftsmen and communities encouraged by Pro Terra Sancta. In such a dramatic moment for the Holy Land, looking at the message of the Holy Places and the conservation work of the architect Antonio Barluzzi means rediscovering the mission of the Custody as a path of dialogue and peace.

1914: A TRUCE, A PROMISE?

Meeting with Antonio Besana, curator of the exhibition 1914, Something New on the Western Front. Introduction and moderation by Davide Perillo, journalist

The testimonies of those who were protagonists of the Truce narrate one of the most touching Christmas stories, capable of breaking even the stone hearts of men in our time. These are extraordinary events that deserve to be celebrated every year to strengthen the certainty that all this was and still is possible. For this reason, they cannot and must not be forgotten. We want to rediscover that men with different conceptions, ideas, and intentions can come together if they know how to seek the essential.

“WHO ARE YOU? THE CHALLENGE OF JERUSALEM”. ORIGINAL THEATRICAL PRODUCTION. WITH ETTORE BASSI

Admission fee - Buy tickets The playwright Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt accepted the proposal to take a month-long trip to the Holy Land to recount his experience in a diary, thus the book "The Challenge of Jerusalem" was born. Now his voice, at times ironic and disillusioned, at times moved and revealing, becomes a narration on stage, leading the spectator on a physical journey, full of unexpected encounters and events, which soon reveals itself as a demanding inner journey. Bethlehem, Nazareth, and above all, Jerusalem: the city of contradiction, a place that speaks of coexistence, but also of unsolved tensions. With an unexpected reflection, made even more urgent by current events, the author investigates the city of the three monotheisms, searching among its streets full of history and suggestions for a credible word of peace. Schmitt's conversion to Christianity, initially born as a theoretical option, takes flesh in this journey to a mystical revelatory event experienced with transport during the visit to the Holy Sepulcher. The movement from the abstract to the human, which the writer must make in this journey of laborious sharing, is very similar to the path necessary for the coexistence of different beliefs: religions could abandon some abstract rigidity, accepting as necessary the different human traits that characterize them. The encounters and places, true co-protagonists of the staging, are evoked with live musical interventions, scenes, and projected images. The dramaturgy condenses the text, initially not conceived for the theater, into a montage of cinematic style that creates rhythm with the juxtaposition of evocative and narrative scenes. The challenge of Jerusalem is an opportunity to publicly express the complexity and urgency of the provocation that comes from the lands of Israel and Palestine. The intricate political contrast here takes on the universal tones of a narrative that seeks the essential in the tragedy, separating accidental factors from an indispensable charity for the human. Based on the work "The Challenge of Jerusalem.

A Journey to the Holy Land" by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, translated by Alberto Bracci Testasecca. Text adaptation by Otello Cenci and Emanuele Fant. Directed by Otello Cenci. With Ettore Bassi. “I WANT THE PEACE THAT NO MAN CAN GIVE” POETRY AND MUSIC SHOW BY THE NICCO FRIENDS ASSOCIATION

Is it possible to hope for peace in a world increasingly marked by conflicts? How to face the contradictions and contrasts that characterize our everyday life? The desire for peace to prevail over conflict and, in a broader sense, for truth, goodness, and justice to triumph over evil, is it just an idealistic dream destined to clash with harsh reality? The show offers a journey on these themes through the recitation of poetic texts, both ancient and contemporary, and the performance of musical pieces. Expert voices, including that of Sauro Albisani, will alternate with young voices, selected mainly from the winners of the first three editions of the Niccolò Bizzarri Poetry Competition.
